About This Role
As an Assistant Building Engineer, you'll play an important role in keeping Sabey's commercial properties operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. Working alongside the Chief Building Engineer and experienced engineering professionals, you'll support preventive maintenance, building inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and daily property operations.
This position offers an opportunity to build a strong foundation in commercial building engineering. You'll gain practical experience with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building automation, and life-safety systems while developing the technical skills and judgment needed to take on greater responsibility over time.
Sabey values curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn. If you're mechanically inclined, enjoy solving problems, and want to grow your career in an environment where experienced professionals are invested in your development, this could be a great next step.
Your Contribution Will Likely Include
- Performing preventive maintenance, routine inspections, and basic repairs to keep commercial properties operating at their best.
- Assisting with troubleshooting and maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, building controls, fire/life-safety, and security systems under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Responding to tenant service requests and helping resolve building maintenance concerns with professionalism and care.
- Inspecting building equipment, common areas, tenant spaces, rooftops, parking areas, and exterior conditions to identify maintenance needs.
- Supporting building automation and energy-management activities, including system monitoring, equipment checks, and operational testing.
- Coordinating with outside vendors and contractors to facilitate building access, communicate site conditions, and support successful completion of maintenance work.
- Maintaining accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, equipment documentation, and work orders using Yardi and other property management systems.
- Assisting with fire/life-safety programs, emergency procedures, tenant drills, and building readiness activities.
- Supporting tenant move-ins and move-outs, seasonal maintenance needs, and daily property operations.
- Collaborating with engineering and property management teams to communicate building conditions, prioritize maintenance needs, and resolve issues.
- Participating in assigned after-hours on-call coverage and emergency response activities.
- Continuously expanding your technical knowledge through hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
Experience You Will Bring
- High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship experience, or relevant technical training preferred.
- One or more years of experience in commercial building maintenance, facilities operations, skilled trades, or a related technical environment preferred. Relevant technical education may substitute for some experience.
- Foundational understanding of building maintenance, mechanical systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, or building controls.
- Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the ability to recognize safety concerns and know when to seek additional guidance.
- Interest in learning how commercial building systems operate and developing broader technical expertise.
- Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with tenants, colleagues, vendors, and contractors.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and develop proficiency reading equipment manuals, floor plans, diagrams, and schematics.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage assigned tasks and maintain accurate records.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn Yardi, work-order platforms, building automation systems, and emerging technologies, including AI tools.
- Valid Washington State driver's license, clean driving record, and auto insurance.
- Willingness to pursue relevant technical certifications as your career develops.
- Ability to perform hands-on building maintenance activities, including climbing ladders and stairs, accessing equipment areas and rooftops, using tools, lifting or maneuvering up to 50 pounds, and working in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Ability to travel between assigned properties and participate in after-hours on-call coverage as needed.
Most importantly, you'll bring a positive attitude, strong initiative, reliability, and a genuine desire to learn. Sabey is looking for someone who wants to grow into a skilled building engineering professional, not someone who already knows everything.
