About the role

Why should you join our success story?

Based on patented technology developed at MIT, Harvard Medical School and by the Company, Myomo develops and markets the MyoPro® product line of lightweight, non-invasive, powered arm braces (orthoses) to restore function in paralyzed or weakened arms and hands of individuals that have suffered a stroke, spinal cord, or nerve injury. (E.g. brachial plexus injury or other neuro-muscular disabilities.) It is the only device that, sensing a patient’s own neurological signals through non-invasive wearable sensors, can restore the ability to use their arms and hands so that they can live independently, increase their quality of life, reduce cost of care, and return to work.  Published clinical research shows a clinically significant instantaneous reduction in upper extremity impairment with the MyoPro.  Our technology has been referred by leading-edge rehabilitation facilities including Mayo Clinic, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Loma Linda Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, numerous VA Hospitals, and more. Myomo is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, with sales and clinical professionals across the U.S.

What we're looking for

Success in this role requires more than technical expertise and leadership. Our Principal Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in establishing engineering priorities, aligning resources, and driving effective execution across the function. This individual will help ensure the team is focused on solving the right problems at the right time, balancing technical challenges, project timelines, and broader business objectives.

Our ideal candidate leads by example, fostering a culture of technical excellence, curiosity, and continuous improvement. They maintain a strong user-centric perspective, approach ideas with objectivity rather than attachment, and embrace rapid testing, learning, and iteration. They combine sound engineering judgment with a pragmatic, results-oriented mindset, consistently driving progress toward meaningful product and commercial outcomes.

• Leading and/or facilitating rigorous design reviews, fostering a culture of technical excellence and
accountability.
• Promoting a high-performance design and development environment, mentoring and coaching
engineers as appropriate.
• Ensuring that designs prioritize comfort, weight optimization, adjustability, and long-term wearability, incorporate clinician and patient feedback into iterative design improvements.
• Driving clarity around project priorities, allocating resources and managing timelines appropriately in accordance with Project Management in order to meet product development milestones.
• Ensuring compliance within a medical device design controls environment, supporting V&V as well as production improvement processes as appropriate.
• Partnering with Manufacturing to support design transfer and production scale-up.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master's or other advanced degree may be a plus.
  • 10+ years' experience in design engineering including mechanical architecture with experience coaching and guiding junior team members.
  • Medical device industry experience with a demonstrated understanding of design controls is a strong plus. Other regulatory environments may be considered.
  • Significant experience with patient-customized parametric modeling and design highly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience taking a product or major subystem from concept to commercialization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication as well as organizational and time management skills.
